Maths can be enjoyable, if it is taught the right way. Here are some thoughts on this subject from an experienced teacher and student of mathematics. This page will also lead you to a large number of resources on the ww-web, to help you in your efforts to learn/teach mathematics.

ROME WAS NOT BUILT IN A DAY

This is still a prototype web site for web based learning.

The subjects I wish to include here, are very rich and profound. It will take some time to get all my "classrooms" up and running. Please bear with me. You can already select a "classroom" from the links made operational in the gurukul home page.
Have a nice time, discovering and learning (at Partha's gurukul) !

And, remember to send a mail to Prof. Partha who is working hard to set up all this.

Go to the "gurukul" main door

AND CHOOSE YOUR CLASSROOM AGAIN.
VISIT THIS GURUKUL AS OFTEN AS YOU CAN.

Graph theory -- terminology by Prof. Partha.

On-line version | Off line version

Enter the fascinating world of graph theory. This one-stop site will tell you all about graph theory, in an easy, user-friendly style. Spend some time here. You can even download the whole site as a single tarball.

This is "work in progress", so please bear with us for some time, till the page becomes fully operational.

With Prof. Partha, the teaching does not end in the classroom.

Non-traditional teaching initiatives of Prof. Partha

This part of Prof. Partha's website is inspired from similar learning initiatives like :

Prof. Parthasarathy taught discrete maths to undergrad students of computer science, in engineering colleges affiliated to Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU), Hyderabad, in India. He has always been interested in the mechanisms involved in the teaching of mathematics, and has always been looking for ways to make this a more enjoyable experience both for the teacher and the taught.

Prof. Partha's papers on this subject

Here are some papers, summarising Partha's thoughts on the "art of teaching mathematics".
These thoughts emerge from Partha's experiences as a teacher and also as a student of mathematics.

  1. Why is it so difficult to teach (mathematics) ?

  2. The futility of teaching mathematics to engineering students in India (conference paper --- pdf file)

  3. COMING SOON -- Watch this space

Better light a candle than curse the darkness -- Some simple steps you can take, to overcome the various lacunae in our system. Costs nothing. Can give spectacular results !

Who is a mathematician ? -- A question which is easy to ask, but very difficult to answer without getting into controversies.

PEOPLE

Please help me find my Erdos number

Please let me know your ERDOS NUMBER, if you have one. Please let me know the names of your co-authors. I will try to compute my ERDOS number, using both backward chaining and forward chaining. Your ERDOS number will be published on the web, so that others may also be able to compute their ERDOS numbers.

Send me a mail, today. Thank you.

SOME BRANCHES OF MATHS

For very obvious reasons, not every branch of mathematics can be included in this section. I have included only a few randomly chosen topics. There is no specific reason why these topics were retained whereas other topics have not been included here.

EVENTS

The International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO), also known as the International Mathematical Olympiad) is an annual mathematics competition for high school students. It is one - in fact, the oldest - of the International Science Olympiads. The first IMO was held in Romania in 1959. The problems come from various areas of mathematics, such as are included in math curricula at secondary schools. Finding the solutions of these problems, however, requires exceptional mathematical ability and excellent mathematical knowledge on the part of the contestants.

If you are organising an event related to mathematics (symposium, seminar, workshop, tutorial etc.), this is the best place to make an announcement. Let the world know. This service is free ! (YES, free, gratis). Please give us a URL to where we can link. No direct announcements here. We will add a link to your page. If you wish, we can also add a small graphic image (logo, banner etc.). Please e mail us the graphic image file (png, jpg or gif).

DISCUSSION GROUPS AND FORUMS

AWM Discussion Group -- Very active discussion group. Mostly dedicated to "women in mathematics".

Math-thinking -- A "meeting place" for computer scientists interested in incorporating mathematical reasoning into Computer Science curricula
This list is the "meeting place" for a group of computer scientists interested in incorporating mathematical reasoning into Computer Science courses and curricula. The group expects to generate specific projects aimed at encouraging others to incorporate mathematical reasoning into their curricula. This list serves as a place to disucss these projects, as well as to discuss other issues related to mathematical reasoning in computer science. More information related to this group is available here

A "Yahoo group" for maths and maths teaching in India. We do get some useful tips very frequently on this absolutely free mailing list.

Need help in maths ?

Ask the india-math yahoo group mentioned above. That is the best place to pose your questions. Prof. Partha cannot be an expert in all areas of maths. He specialises only in discrete maths. In this group, you have a whole lot of very competent people, covering almost every branch of mathematics.
